Sandbox News and Announcements

The Sandbox News blog is used to provide updates when changes occur within the Sandbox.NetFx3.com.

The Sandbox is open!

Today I'm excited to announce that Microsoft has launched the Sandbox.  As I explained on the home page, the Sandbox is an area of the NetFx3.com site that has been designed to use Windows CardSpace.  The first release of the sandbox is designed for use with Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta 3 and the .NET Framework Runtime Components July CTP.  You can find the list of requirements and step-by-step instructions here.

We plan to make several changes to the Sandbox site over the next few months.   Some of these changes will include supporting additional browsers, supporting newer versions of the .NET Framework Runtime Components, and improving the user experience.   Eventually, we plan to incorporate the support for Windows CardSpace into the rest of the NetFx3.com sites and several other sites.   So in some ways you can think of this as a live test site, or playground for Windows CardSpace - hence the name Sandbox.

On behalf of several folks at Microsoft, we invite you to visit the site and and try out Windows CardSpace.   When you do so please leave us feedback on your experience.    If you would like to learn more about Windows CardSpace, please visit the Windows CardSpace sub-community on the NetFx3.com site.

When I came to login today, I tried to use my InfoCard I backed up on Aug29th. But it was not accepted.  Is this because we are now on RC1?

September 22, 2006 8:39 AM

jamescon said:

Yes, if you've logged into the site before we upgraded to support RC1, then you will need to reset your password, login using a username and password, and then reassociate your Information Card with your account.  There are details on the home page at http://sandbox.netfx3.com

It is now November 15th. There has not been a post on this site since the original open for business post on July 17th.

The RTM version is now available.  The RC1 version of CardSpace has some serious problems. I'd like to work with the release bits on my XP machine, but the instructions provided for uninstalling RC1 are confusing, contradictory and IMO suspect.

I realize that you guys are at crunch time, but your long silence does not inspire confidence.

All the sites dedicated to InfoCard and CardSpace require an InfoCard supplying an email address claim. This piece of personal information is easily used for tracking purposes.

If every site requires an email address then one of the primary values of InfoCard is out-the-window. This is a poor way to start. It does not inspire confidence.

I'm digging CardSpaces.  I havn't looked at what it takes to implement on the server side, but the user experience is pretty clean.
Why wasn't the picture I sent with my card automatically included as my Avatar?
Because the picture on the card when viewed in Cardspace is, like the card name, a way for you to tell cards apart.  It is never sent to any site that the card itself is submitted to.

CardSpace is super cool, (OK, I refrained from using UBER), however one thing that concerns me is the way the F.B.I. has dealt with U.S. Encryption technology as it leaves the U.S., even for Software. I'm hoping Microsoft is already ahead of them.

Don't think yahoo will go the cardspace route since they seem to be leaning towards openid.

I am very interested in this technology after reading the New York Times article yesterday.  However, as some of the other commenters have noted, there still seem to be some interoperability issues with other platforms.  I was able to create by account using Firefox 3.0 and digitalme on Ubuntu 8.04, but I was not able to login.  To login, I had to switch to Windows XP and Cardspace.  Good luck with your continued development, and I hope to see the technology more widely deployed.  One thing that might help, incidentally, would be more accessible kits and instructions for personal sites and hobbyists to add the Cardspace technology to their own sites. I centainly am interested in doing it for my own use, but I am basically just an Enlish major with a geeky streak, so I would need a fairly uncomplicated kit with detailed, straightforward instructions.
